It’s made with a combination of vegan butter and vegan cream cheese, along with a bit of salt, vanilla and powdered sugar.

Cream cheese frosting has such a unique, classic, irresistible flavor – and I’m so happy to share this dairy free, vegan, lactose free substitute that is just as delicious, if not better!

Dairy Free Cream Cheese Frosting Recipe

While my Vegan Vanilla Buttercream Frosting and Vegan Whipped Cream are both big hits on so many cakes and cookies, sometimes you need that rich, tangy flavor to pair with flavors like pumpkin, red velvet or carrot cake.

Using dairy free frosting makes it easy to serve everyone, whether they are vegan or not.

There are so many vegan cream cheeses in stores these days it makes baking without milk incredibly easy.

While any tub of vegan cream cheese will do, I highly recommend the plain Kite Hill brand, I think the flavor is spot on and it works perfectly with this recipe!

Mixing the Frosting Ingredients

Making this dairy free cream cheese frosting recipe is incredibly easy to do.

To start, you’ll want to mix the cream cheese, butter, vanilla and salt in a bowl until smooth.

You can whisk everything by hand or use an electric mixer – be careful if you do use an electric mixer though, overmixing will result in a runnier frosting, so mix as little as necessary until smooth.

Then, add the powdered sugar in 1/2 cup increments, mixing in between just until it starts getting smooth.

Once all the powdered sugar is added, give it a good whisking to make it smooth.

If the frosting is still a little runny, you can add a bit more powdered sugar until the desired consistency is reached.
