Easy Vegan Bread Yeast Rolls
These homemade vegan yeast rolls are so tender on the inside with a delicious crisp on the outside.
I love the circular shape these have – some very simple shaping before you bake them will give you these perfect little vegan bread rolls!
While these dairy free dinner rolls are perfect to serve with a big meal, they’re also the perfect little snacks.
They have plenty of buttery flavor, and I love serving them with jam, agave or peanut butter too!
- All-Purpose Flour – Bleached or unbleached are both fine. I have not tried this recipe with gluten free flour or any other type.
- Instant Yeast – Rapid Rise yeast helps speed up this process greatly. If you’re using normal yeast follow the rise time on the package.
- Plant Milk – Any time is fine, I always use oat or soy.
- Vegan Butter – You can use sticks or from a tub because you will melt it anyway.
- Sugar – A little sugar helps the yeast rise and makes these rolls so delicious yet not as sweet as vegan Hawaiian rolls.
- Salt – Helps bring out all the butter and yeast flavor!
- Oil – Just a small amount to coat a bowl while the dough rises.
How to Make Dairy Free Dinner Rolls
Making the Vegan Bun Dough
To make these delicious vegan dinner rolls, start by heating your plant milk to approximately 110°F.
You want the milk warm enough to activate the yeast but not kill it. Mix together the sugar and milk in a bowl and then add in the yeast.
If your bowl has a lot of surface area, you can just sprinkle it on top, otherwise gently mix in.
Let this sit for 10-15 minutes or until frothy, then mix in the melted vegan butter, salt and one cup of flour.
Mix well and then add remaining flour – if the mixture is a little too sticky, add a little more flour by the tablespoon. You want it to have a soft, slightly sticky texture but still be workable.
Shaping and Baking Vegan Rolls
Flour a flat surface as well as your hands and knead dough for 2-3 minutes until smooth and elastic.
Oil a bowl and place the dough inside, then place a towel on top and rise for about 10-15 minutes.
Cut the dough into 12 equal sized balls – I like to do this by weight. Simply weigh the entire dough and divide by twelve, then measure each dough ball to this amount. If you don’t have a way to measure, simply use your best judgment.
To shape the dough, pull the sides towards the center, gently pressing down. Then flip and roll the bottom of the bun on an un-floured surface in a circular motion using the palm of your hand to seal (see the video in this recipe for a visual).
Place equally spaced apart in a 13×9 greased baking pan and cover with a towel – rise again for 10-15 minutes.
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
Brush with melted vegan butter and bake for 18-22 minutes, or until nicely golden brown on top.
Enjoy these vegan buns as is or with some more vegan butter brushed on top!
Best Vegan Yeast Rolls
This is the best ever recipe for rolls that have a little extra flavor and texture than anything you’ll get from a store.
This vegan rolls recipe makes twelve little buns, but you can always half it or double it depending on how many you need.
If you need to keep these on hand for awhile, they can store in the fridge in an air tight container for about 5-7 days.

- 2 Cups All-Purpose Flour
- 1/2 Packet Instant Yeast (3.5g or 1 1/8 tsp)
- 1 Tbsp Sugar
- 3/4 Tsp Salt
- 3/4 Cup Warm Plant Milk (approx. 110°F)
- 2 Tbsp Butter + more to brush
- 1 Tbsp Oil
- Mix together sugar and warm milk in a bowl. Add yeast and let sit for 5-10 minutes, or until frothy.*
- Add melted vegan butter, salt and 1 cup flour, mix until combined and then add remaining flour and mix well.
- If the mixture is too sticky, you can add a little more flour by the tablespoon until it's workable. It should have a soft, slightly sticky texture.

- Add oil to a bowl and spread around, place dough down and cover to rise for 10-15 minutes.
- Cut the dough into 12 equal size balls - I like to do this by weighing the dough and dividing by 12, then making each dough weight this amount.
- Take each dough ball and pull the edges up towards the top to smooth the sides. Then flip and roll the bottom of the bun on an unfloored surface in a circular motion using the palm of your hand to seal (see video for example).
- Place in a greased 13x9 baking pan and cover with a towel to rise again for 10-15 minutes. Then preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
- Brush with melted vegan butter and bake for 18-22 minutes, or until nicely golden brown on top.
- Brush with more melted vegan butter if desired and then enjoy!
* If the mixture does not froth, the yeast may be old or the milk may not be the right temperature. Try again until it gets frothy or the rolls will not rise!
